Can someone please explain a "sludge" wash to me

Actually that's what prompted this thread (I'm the last one to post in it and no one answeed the question).

The thread covers the "how" but not the "what" or "why."

I guess it's to better get down into recessed panel lines and you should be able to wipe it away leaving just the "sludge" in the panel line.

The why is to bring out the detail in panel lines and etc.

Same as a paint wash or oil wash.

In my work with it it gives a dirtier look than either oil or paint washes.
