Sound has gone bad

I have the old Lunar Models 16.5" Jupiter II along with; the retractable landing gear set, full interior set, AND... the lighting and sound kit. I just drug out the lighting/sound kit for the first time in over 10 years. I hooked up a 9v batt to test the systems and the sound now sounds terrible. It use to be an awesome reproduction of the Jupiter 2's engine, but now is just a graveling mess. Is this a circuit problem, or is it just the speaker?

Stored for 10 years - I'd think the speaker

Should be able to pick up a replacement at Jameco or DigiKey or even Mouser
