resin on resin? will it stick

Ok, i'm starting building a long resin model 40 inches more or less and the cast is really thin. i want to add extra strength so i thought of adding a strip of steel to give it additionnal support along the length and then use that to make a foot to hold the model. now the question is, if i place the metal strip and then pour resin over, will the new resin stick good to the old one? Anythink to look out for.

i'm not sure if i want to do this or simply glue the steel strip in, i kind of have a past past with glue and steel, they then to fell apart after some time so looking for alternatives..

suggestions, comments?

Yes, it will stick. Very well, indeed. Hermetically stick. Just make sure you don't put anything on the part you need it to stick to.

Resin will stick to resin. But... Surface prep, like with paint, is important. Any contaminants on the surface must be removed. Best way is to sand the surface with 220.

As for gluing the metal... Did you use epoxy?? That's the way to go. CA, and others will/can fail over time depending on the stress to the part. But a good liberal coating of epoxy on the resin, and around the metal part (encapsulate) will hold real well.

If you're looking for optimal strength you'll either want to go with tubes or t-bars, even angle bits.

And a good coat of 2-ton epoxy will survive damned near anything.

thanks guys, that's was i thought but i wanted to ask just to make sure.

for the epoxy, it was a 2 part epoxy at the time, don't remember if it was old epxoy at the time, i just remember having a bad experience with it

i'm probably going to use a left over aluminium strip from a tile job. something like this: http://www.theonestopplasticsshop.co.uk ... e_edge.jpg really light and really stong, one side is like this [_ so maybe i'll double it up and have a structure like that _][_

Bolt them together at a few points along the run. Don't just lay them in there and hope they stay aligned.
