You don't need a ton of it. Think of it like a layer of paint, but one that will melt once you get to the final step. Everything should be dry before you begin, otherwise you'll just smudge it when you wet the top layer of paint.

I would also add that resin almost always seems to be rougher on the sculpt, so if you want a flawless model it can take more work. But that can also be the fun part. I have seen a few near-perfect resin models. And of course there are plenty of bad styrene kits. Not much else that hasn't been said ...

I'm still a fan of the cheapest spray primer at Walmart, even though it's no longer $1. It's quite thin (which would normally be a bad thing, but it's perfect for models).

Tamiya tape is good, but overpriced for what it is. The green 3M tape can be found at any auto parts store by the spray paint and Bondo. For the price of a tiny roll of Tamiya you can buy the 3M stuff and cut it to any size you want and you'll probably never run out.

#1 is going to be to use really skinny tape. I don't know what kind you use, but if it's too wide then you can just trim a piece with a ruler and knife. I always use 3M green automotive tape, and that stuff stretches around bends really well, especially if you trim it thin. Cheapie white masking tap...

Word is that acrylic reducer will work. Get ready to mix and mix though to get it from the jelly it starts out as to something you can brush or airbrush with. And I would definitely strain it if you're going to airbrush.

I predict that the main answers are going to be automotive spot putty (no mixing) and Aves (2 parts). Both of which are good, just for different things. Aves won't crack so it's good for larger stuff. I would never use it for a pinhole or something else tiny so spot putty is good for that. Also, sup...

^ Springs are a great way to go. Although once you reach a certain size you can more easily see the gaps that form between the wire around tighter bends. I've seen guys use guitar strings before. I personally like these little foam sticks with different grits on them... The catch is you'll have to walk down the nail polish aisle. ;)

But the nice thing is that you can trim them if you need a sharp point or specific shape.

What about a mix of paint and something like Durham's water putty over a base that will cause it to crackle (per the above suggestions)? That would give you a little more thickness, like mud.

Might experiment with that in a bit just to see...

For quick stuff, I like to use silicone caulk. Make sure it's 100% and the clear stuff. The trick is to mix in a pea-size amount of acrylic paint, like you'd mix body filler. Then it sets up within minutes.

Fair warning: it'll make the house reek of vinegar, so do it outside if you care.
