Manned Reconnaissance Probe

Scale: Not Stated
Source: Out of the Cradle by William K. Hartmann, Ron Miller and Pamela Lee

This is a scratch-built model of the Manned Reconnaissance Probe as described and illustrated in the book Out of the Cradle by William K. Hartmann, Ron Miller and Pamela Lee. The book is a speculation on the future of manned space exploration.

The probe is an all-purpose manned Solar System exploration vehicle capable of exploring the inner and outer planets. Habitat modules are interchangeable with cargo modules or even fuel tanker modules depending on the mission at hand.

The probe was kit-bashed using parts from spare parts and stock. The forward habitat module is the bottom end of an Estes Rocket nose cone. The main power core is the escape tower from Estes' Mercury Capsule nose-cone. Landing legs and fuel tanks are Plastruct and Evergreen stock. Model Master metallic blue paint was used right out of the spray-can. Decals came from various left over decal sheets.

The asteroid in the display is a 5 inch Plastic Things Space Base.
