Taiidan Scout : Fiirkan

Scale: 1/72
Source: Homeworld computer game manual

The scout-class fighter is named after a small hunting bird native to the temperate deserts on Kharak. The fiirkan hunts by riding the wave-front of the huge seasonal sandstorms, plucking its food as the violent winds drive various small animals from hiding. With excellent speed, range and maneuverability, the Firrkan class scout must behave as its namesake does; always on the edge of combat, looking for an opportunity.

The construction of the model started in mid May of this year, and was completed after around 370 hours work. It's based on the Firrkan class scout in the PC game "Homeworld". My model is based entirely on the concept drawing and text found in the game's instruction manual - the text and image depict an early design being tested over the Kharak desert. This implies flight in an atmosphere as well as deep space - I have added dirt and chip marks into the paintwork, and built retractable landing gear into this design. The images depict the landing gear up and down. It is constructed from scratch from Sheet Styrene, with no added pre-molded kit parts. It is painted with Humbrol aerosol enamels and regular brush techniques for the smaller details and weathering. The model dimensions are W = 17.5"; H = 13.5"; L = 20.5".
